I was looking for a book that might appeal to a (mostly female) class on the sea. I really wanted to like & use this book, but I just can't. The writing is just plain awful. The structure is, well, "muddled" is the word that comes to mind. there isn't nearly enough about the sea or sailing. basically it is the story of a poor little rich girl who has trouble at a series of private schools in New York. Dad buys her a sailboat and challenges her to sail around the world to get her head straight. I guess it sort of works. We hear far too much about her various french Boyfriends that she picks up on the way & far too little about the actual voyage. There is also page after page on her problems with her parents. The author seems like a menace to herself and to others, maybe this is how a certain segment of contemporary (well off) youth behave, but there isn't anything here that I see particularly inspirational for my students. Review of "Maiden Voyage" by Tania AebiThis is another autobiographical book about a teenager who sails around the world. The difference is in this one her father pushes her to do it because she is an aimless 18 year old living in NYC.The book isn't as detailed with the day by day journey as "One Girl One Dream" but does give nice summaries of certain days at sea. Especially her first knockdown (Wind forcing boat onto side) also when her 26 foot boat was hit by tanker in the Mediterranian sea.
